The role of standards and interoperability

This online instructor-led training course was delivered by the African Advanced Level Telecommunications Institute (AFRALTI) in collaboration with International Telecommunications Union and with the support from the Global Gateway initiative of the European Union. The course provides participants with a comprehensive introduction to ICT standards and interoperability within ICT systems, guiding participants in self-monitoring practices to ensure compliance with both industry and regulatory standards.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Describe the ICT standards and how they are formulated.

  • Clarify how national and international standards are set.

  • Explain the elements involved in a telecommunication process in terms of structure and services.

  • Discuss the role of regulations and the reason why all players are expected to conform.

  • Examine ICT systems and their interoperability.

  • Define key terms such as interconnection tariffs or interoperability between mobile wallets of different operators.

  1. ICTs and Standards, including the ITU Conformance and Interoperability Programme.

  2. Communication elements (revision): definitions, characteristics, and examples.

  3. Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs).

  4. Standards overview.

  5. Introduction to standardization and the role of standards.

  6. Formulating and setting standards.

  7. Compliance and conformity to set standards.

  8. Standardization in telecommunications.

  9. Managing nonconformity and enforcement.

  10. Identifying stakeholders and regulatory bodies.

  11. The law governing standards and the role of regulators.

  12. Overview of various systems (human body, machine, car, computer).

  13. Introduction to Information Systems.

  14. Information systems integration.

  15. Systems interoperability.
